ARTIST - Lola Dunston
Lola was born in Rome (Italy) and received her artistic training in Rome (Accademia delle belle Arti and London Heatherly School of Art). She has travelled in America and extensively in Europe.
She has had many exhibitions in Europe and South Africa, winning several awards for her black and white drawings.
She immigrated to South Africa about 50 years ago from which time she has devoted a large measure of her time to the preservation and promotion of Art.
In the early 1970’s when she became aware of the intention to demolish the western façade of Church Square in Pretoria, she began with the assistance of her husband Dr. T Dunston, to research the early history of the city and recorded it.
The result was “YOUNG PRETORIA,” a reference book with rare, useful information, photographs and drawings. The 81 drawings demanded precision work that had to convey the atmosphere of those early days. Lola said that it took 4 years to complete the book and she blessed her husband for helping her with the text. “Young Pretoria” was published in 1975. Within 5 years every single copy was sold, there were 1000 ordinary copies and 100 deLuxe.
She has been a member of several Art Societies, the Academy of S.Nicola of Greece, Association des Beaux Arts de Cannes, Society of Graphic Artists London, Accademy de Lutece Paris and a board member of the Northern Transvaal Branch of the South African Association of Arts from 1975 – 1990.
She has composed several pieces of music, some of them have been played by the Johannesburg (Dr Solly Aranowsky) Promenande Orchestra and by Musica Rara.
In the year 2000 she was awarded 1st prize for Italian poetry at UNISA.
Currently Lola still works on her art day after day.
